Brainspotting Therapy
What is Brainspotting Therapy?
Brainspotting is a therapeutic technique that taps into the brain’s natural ability to heal itself.
It is a focused, body-based psychotherapy that identifies, processes, and releases trauma, emotional pain, and anxiety by linking eye positions to unprocessed memories in the subcortical brain.
Developed by Dr. David Grand, it operates on the principle that "where you look affects how you feel"
How does it work?
The process involves focusing on specific eye positions, called “brainspots”.
It targets the deeper areas of the brain (subcortical brain) where trauma is stored, bypassing the verbal, neocortex brain utilized in traditional talk therapy.
What does a session involve?
After identifying a specific issue, event, or emotion to focus on, we locate the ‘brainspot’.
Once found, you hold your gaze on that spot focusing on whatever thoughts, emotions, memories, or physical sensations arise.
This allows the brain to engage its natural self-healing mechanisms and process the material stored in the subcortical brain.
Processing deep-seated emotions, sensations, and memories, leading to healing and emotional resolution.
In short…
Brainspotting is rooted in the understanding of the brain-body connection
and utilizes the visual field to engage the limbic system and facilitate neurobiological healing.
It can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle to verbalize their emotions,
as it focuses on the brain-body connection and accesses material that traditional talk therapy might not reach.
